$10.5K For A Guitar - Has Gibson Lost Their Minds
In today's video, Paul from The Studio Rats is checking out a Gibson Murphy Lab 59 Heavy Aged Les Paul. These guitars are now in dealers for up to around $10,500, but are they worth the money, or is Gibson trying to tap into the Blues Lawyer market or are these guitars worth every penny?

    I also have an R9 Heavy aged LP Murphy and loved it so much I ultra light aged my CS 57 LP junior. It turned out really good. Used the can of duster to do the finish checking. I enjoyed the tone thru your Phil X, so I guess I will put that on my wish list. I’m 66 and don’t gig and will never age a guitar naturally so these work for me.

    Not worth $10k. Hell many Epiphones are getting overpriced these days. Any of them over the $500-900 price range are a bit over the top IMHO. They started putting CTS pots and better components in many so a certain price increase is fair, but $1,500 for an Epiphone? I'll stick with my modified Epiphone Les Paul guitars. They're gig ready and affordable. I actually like the old Epiphone headstock.

    I’m a fan of Gibson and not a whiner who hates everything they do. But I will never understand paying extra for a guitar deliberately made to look used (Gibson isn’t the only one doing it). Buy a new one and put your own wear on it. Earn it by playing. “Reliced” guitars are one case where it clearly is someone with a lot of money who doesn’t even play. Or in this case, someone who wants to be a collector but can’t quite afford it. I can understand Gibson selling it. There is clearly a demand for the actual vintage guitars that are astronomically priced. So why not sell a cheaper one? I just can’t understand anyone buying it. I’m a guitar player. Not a collector. I have a Les Paul that is heavily worn. Due to years of playing, in adverse conditions. It was new when I got it.

    I used to rip on people that bought them, thought it was hilariously stupid. Until I played a '59 at a local shop just messing around with a friend...and I was completely blown away by it. I absolutely fell in love with it immediately. And then a few days later my Dad passed away 2 weeks before his 50th bday. He had been saving up for many years to buy a truck and a 5th wheel camper, and he never got the chance to even buy it. After that I said screw it, you only have this one incredibly short life to live... go live it. You can always make more money. You cant always connect and fall in love with a guitar or any other hobby. So I bought it and I will never sell it. I couldnt care less how dumb I seem to others anymore.

    Hi. Great content and your channel! I would like, if possible, to know your opinion and preference since you have been able to and can use and get to know the Marshall JTM Studio ST20H and the Marshall Studio Vintage SV20H. If you could only have one of the two, which one would you have? the marshall st20h or the marshall sv20h? Which one do you think sounds better and which one is more versatile? Do they both receive the pedals very well? Which would be better for a rock or hard rock sound and a good clean? Thank you very much and I hope you don't mind my question. I would like to know your personal opinion about these two Marshall vintage sound heads. Congratulations on your work, all the information, content and your channel. Greetings! @TheStudioRats

    Do people who buy these actually gig with them? Crazy price but Gibson is catering to rich folks. 1600 euro for that Lite guitar is ridicules too for what it is. Paid 600 for my tribute. Brand new. No luthier would get away with wonky pickups. You will be crucified online as a builder.

  • @jeremyjohnston592
    @jeremyjohnston592 3 години тому

    Sounds absolutely fantastic. Incredible tone. Brilliant playing as always. However, at 4 times the price of a 50s Standard model, I don't believe its 4 times better. I've got a 50s Standard Les Paul, and its amazing. Definitely the best Les Paul I've played in 35 years of playing the guitar. Probably the best guitar I've ever, or will ever own....

    There is something magical about a good Gibson, but the prices have gone a bit mental even with inflation. I’m lucky to have a stunning R8. The difference between that and my standard Les Paul is about 10 per cent and I would say the biggest difference is in the weight and playedinness between the two. I tend to go towards the standard. Both are stunning guitars but I will probably sell my R8 first

    All those high buck/high-quid axes are intended for doctors, lawyers, media people, et cetera who have more money than any ten of us ordinary folk but who loved their time in high school garage bands, and can afford everything they couldn't back in the day. All the big manufacturers have Custom Shops who'll make you whatever your teenage self lusted after. People are buying them and the Custom Shops are doing a land-office business. Those creations, however, are NOT for the working musician. We gotta pinch pennies. Regular production IS for the working musician, and if you don't mind giving your money to slave states you can get cheapo knockoffs all day long that look like the real thing.

    Would you let someone else play your guitar for you while you watch? I don't understand the relic phenomenon, and even less so with that outrageous price. I don't think anything justifies that, unless someone tries to brag about owning an ancient instrument. I have my 2003 Les Paul, I bought it new and I made all the "relic" that it has. The marks of the belt buckle, the fading of its beautiful sunburst...and every time I see it and touch it I feel proud of it. And I paid the normal price for a Gibson Les Paul of the time for it.

    Buy a used Gibson Custom Shop you really like and play it for years. If you will sell it, in a few years, you'd probably get the same money back. So you play the guitar for almost free. I bought a new Collectors Choice LP aged, back in 2014. It did cost 6K. I thought, I must be crazy. I would have no problem selling it now for even more money. I won't, it is too good. I play it every day. Of course one doesn't know how the market evolves and if it is the same with the Murphy Labs but Gibsons have always kept a high value.

    Gibson have been pushing upmarket and testing the willingness to pay for these high end guitars for a while now. Watch and car industries proved there are lots of people with the money worldwide to sell enough at those prices.. Not aimed at working musicians…. The good lightweight used ones aren’t cheap either… At those prices I’d rather have a good luthier copy like an Eggle…

  • @MrSteney
    @MrSteney 4 години тому

    I'm not a fan of relicing, but it's brilliant from a manufacturing standpoint. No B stocks because of a scratch or ding. Normally, an accident during production would result in a markdown of the guitar. Purposely beat the hell out of it though, and folks willingly pay more for it. It's absurd!

  • @bogarbill6331
    @bogarbill6331 4 години тому

    Of course this is worth the money. In fact, I think it's a bargain. What comes out of the Murphy lab these days is simply amazing! And the fact that these guitars are not available to everyone, that is life people deal with it without jealousy. Ps. Saying that a Maybach and the like are just as good for half or more of the price is also absolute nonsense. I also think it is a non-discussion, these guitars are a work of art and you are not obliged to buy one, I will certainly not fail to do so. And no, it doesn't just hang on the wall Paul 🙄

    I have an Epiphone inspired by Gibson 50's Les Paul Gold Top that plays and sounds better than any Gibson I've ever played and I payed $799 for it brand new 2 years ago. I also have a Chibson Chinese Les Paul Standard Cherry Sunburst 60's Tribute that is running a very close 2nd place. I paid $350 for it and installed some Epiphone Alnico Classic Humbuckers in it and it's amazing. Mr. Les Paul himself had more Epiphone Les Paul's in his collection than Gibsons because he preferred the neck profile of the Epiphones better. I have a good friend who has a Les Paul Supreme and the build quality is not very good at all and he paid like $4k for it brand new. Gibsons are way over priced and I've seen some bad build quality on Trogly's Guitar show. Check out his channel, he's very honest in his reviews.

    I wish UA-cam had a rule that in order to review guitars, you need to play as well as Paul does. (Or John Cordy, Shawn Tubbs, etc). Point is, the world is full of great players so there's really no need for guys who know the threads on each screw but can't really demonstrate what the instrument can do.

    The top 1% of working musicians can afford these really otherwise they mainly end up as a trophy guitar for cashed up hobby players. I'm sure they are exceptional instruments but musicians who would really make them sing and play as intended are completely priced out. I put a 3-way switch in my 91 Ibanez JEM and treat it like my LP. Sounds phenomenal with extra playability. If you can splash out for one these though then more power to you!

    I mean, the tone you are getting out of that thing is amazing. You can get a PRS Private Stock for 10K as well. Those are beautiful, clean, brand new guitars. And yet, I would pay this for the Gibson because the tone is amazing and the look has character, like a friend who has been by your side forever. If money were no object, yes, I would buy.

    I'm not a fan of the relics, but I understand that some people love it. I own a Gibson CS R8 and its gloss finish is shiny and still new-looking. I am careful with my guitars, not even a dent or scratch and I play it every day. The bleeding on the binding naturally came about but I'm okay with that. I wonder if the Murphy Lab Custombuckers are different than the regular custom shops. Every guitar is going to sound different. I think your R9 Murphy Lab is a fantastic-sounding guitar. I can't argue whether it's worth it or not the real ones sell for over 250k on a bad day lol. I can't afford either one but I'm more than happy with my #1 and I paid $4800 brand new. I can ding it up myself but not my baby lol. I look at it this way, it's an investment, and if you don't dig the Murphy Lab just by a regular CS and play it. No right or wrong here, you have to make the decision on what comes out of your pocket.
